Previously Grown on Koi from Richdon Koi

One of the main aims of the new koi farm and the massive 50,000 gallon pond is to give UK hobbyists a chance to acquire some truly outstanding young koi and have them grown on in an environment that gives them all the benefits associated with a Japanese mud pond, but with out the risks of koi never coming back out due to predator attack etc.

Whilst the 200 tonne pond is a new development, growing on special tosai and nissai is not something new to the team behind the Richdon koi farm. Infact, Richdon koi have been offering a growing on facility working on the same principals of fantastic filtration and plenty of space per koi as the farm to it's customers for a number of years now with some truly outstanding results being achieved.

The koi below have been grown on by Richdon koi at their facilities in the Midlands

SekiGuchi Tosai Showa April 2007
Tategoi Showa September 2007

The koi on the left is a Showa from the breeder Seki Guchi. She was purchased by a hobbyist on a buying trip with Richdon Koi in April of 2007 as tosai, and already 31cm long.

On return to the UK the koi was placed into the then main growing on pond of 10,000 gallons until being caught in September, photographed, measured to be 50cm and taken home by her delighted owner. Richard states that this tategoi is simply one of the best he's ever had the pleasure to grow on and watch develop.

As you can see the development of this showa during it's time with Richard is outstanding.

This next koi is one that Richard chose for himself and his own pond. She was bought from Dainichi as tosai and at 28cm in length.

The picture on the left of the pair was taken in the spring of 2007 whilst the picture on the right was taken just a few months later in September of 2007 when she had grown to a very healthy 52cm, and yes, she really is 'that' white!

Hoshikin Kohaku Tosai 32cm
Nissai Hoshikin Kohaku 55cm

This koi is a Kohaku from a breeder called Hoshikin, she was bought as a 32cm tosai in the spring of 2007 (koi B in the picture on the far left) and was grown on once again in the 10,000 gallon pond that was being used for developing oung tategoi at that time.

In early 2008 the koi was measured at 55cm and as you can see not only has the shape improved as it has grown but the colouring has deepened and the white ground become more vibrant.

Keep an eye out for this fantastic kohaku on the show circuit.
